Browse Marble Tiles for courtyards, terraces, alfresco floors, poolside areas and other exterior surfaces with natural grey tones and veining that change from one selection to the next. Outdoor Marble Tiles use textured finishes such as Antique and Sandblasted where the actual product and project require them while Marble floor tiles can also support selected interior applications. Stone Planet supplies Marble Tiles for projects in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne with the final choice based on the actual stone, finish, thickness and finished-floor requirement.

The same Marble can appear in more than one format. A grey Marble that works as a paver through a garden can also be used as a tile for a courtyard floor. The stone has not changed. What changes is the product and the way it has to sit in the build.
The common shortcut says tiles go inside and pavers go outside. That rule does not survive contact with real Australian projects. A great deal of Marble tile work happens outdoors on courtyards, terraces and pool surrounds. The reason is usually structural rather than decorative.
In practice the format decision follows a short set of questions. Is there a sound concrete slab already in place, or does the surface need to be built up from the ground? How much height is available between the substrate and the finished floor level? What does the surface have to meet at its edges, a door threshold, a pool coping line or an existing internal floor? Marble tiles are commonly chosen where the project is designed around a fixed tiled surface and finished levels are important. Marble pavers solve a different format decision, with their own thicknesses, finishes and paving requirements.
Thickness follows the same logic and is not a badge for either format. The actual thickness depends on the selected Marble, its source, the processing route and the format required. A tile specification should therefore use the thickness of the actual product rather than a generic tile-versus-paver rule.
Finish matters as much as format. An exterior Marble tile floor needs a surface treated for outdoor use. A honed Marble tile is a different product doing a different job.
| Decision | Marble Tiles | Marble Pavers |
| Typical project approach | Tiled-floor specification over a prepared structure | Paving-format specification for an outdoor paved surface |
| Key planning question | Finished floor level, substrate and fixing build-up | Paving build, levels, edges and adjoining outdoor work |
| Outdoor use | Common on courtyards, terraces, alfresco areas and tiled pool surrounds | Common across pool surrounds, patios, courtyards and other paved areas |
| Finish | Product-specific; textured outdoor finishes where required | Product-specific; textured outdoor paving finishes where required |
A Marble Tile floor is a levels-and-layout decision before it becomes a styling decision. Door thresholds, drains, pool edges, steps and adjoining floors all affect the amount of height available and the way the finished surface needs to meet the rest of the project.
Outdoor Marble Tiles are commonly used across courtyards, terraces, Alfresco Areas and other exterior floors laid over a prepared structure. The Tile format works best when the finished floor height, set-out and adjoining surfaces are resolved before the order is locked.
On tiled Pool Surrounds, the surface finish, Tile set-out, drains and Pool Coping need to work together. The tiled floor should be planned as one connected surface rather than as a loose collection of pieces around the pool.
For projects where the same stone is intended to continue between rooms and outdoor areas, the indoor and outdoor natural stone flooring guide provides additional planning context.
Antique and Sandblasted are the main outdoor finish families in the current Marble tiles collection.
Antique is a family rather than a single recipe. Depending on the stone, the source and the production route, the treatment can combine light sandblasting or brushing with tumbling. The aim is to develop useful grip without flattening the character of the Marble tiles. Two Antique Marble tiles from different sources can feel noticeably different underfoot for that reason. The finish name alone does not settle the question.
Sandblasted is more direct. The intensity of the treatment decides how much texture the surface carries. Sandblasted Marble tiles can achieve P5 when the surface is treated aggressively enough.
Outdoor Marble tiles should achieve P4 to P5 slip resistance. Marble tiling supplied for outdoor use by Stone Planet falls within this range, with the actual result depending on the product, finish and treatment intensity.
Honed Marble or Polish marble tiles sit outside that textured outdoor range. It is generally P2 or P3 and should not be treated as equivalent to the textured finishes used for outdoor Marble.
| Finish family | Where it sits in this page | What to confirm |
| Antique | Textured outdoor Marble tile finish family | Actual product treatment and current slip evidence |
| Sandblasted | Textured outdoor Marble tile finish family | Treatment intensity and product-specific slip evidence |
| Honed / Polished | Primarily indoor context on this page | Actual product, finish and intended indoor use |
Marble tile sizes and thicknesses follow the stone rather than a standard catalogue rule. Marble tiles at Stone Planet can include 12 mm, 15 mm, 20 mm and 30 mm depending on the specific Marble, its source, the processing route available for that source and the format required.
Thinner is not automatically better. Some Marble tiling products become expensive or commercially impractical to process too thin because breakage rises through production. The machinery available at the relevant source also affects what can be produced. A marble tile that runs comfortably at one thickness cannot be assumed to run at another simply because a different Marble product does.
The useful question is therefore not what Marble tiles are in general but what the chosen selection is genuinely produced at.
Finished floor level is where that answer lands. The number matters at:
Total build up includes the tile, the adhesive bed and anything else in the sandwich. A 5mm assumption about the stone becomes a five-millimetre problem at every one of those junctions. Thresholds are the least forgiving of them.
Marble is a hard stone and considered quite rigid. It is fixed to whatever is underneath it and it inherits the behaviour of that structure. Most trouble on external tiled floors starts below the stone rather than in it.
Substrate condition comes first. Is there a slab, is it sound and was it designed for what will sit on it? Is it clean, cured and flat enough to work with? A tiled floor cannot correct a substrate that moves.
Falls and drainage come next. Water has to leave the surface and it has to have somewhere to go once it does. No natural stone solves a drainage problem. An external tiled area that holds water will show it. Where the surface sits over occupied or enclosed space, waterproofing is a separate system installed beneath the tile. Sealing the stone is a different job and does not replace it.
Movement provision belongs in the plan rather than in the repairs. An exposed external floor is not a protected internal one. Perimeters, changes of substrate and large uninterrupted fields all deserve thought before fixing starts.
Set out is the last thing that can still be changed for nothing. Once the first marble tiles are installed, the joint lines, the cut positions and the relationship to the pool edge or door opening are effectively locked.
Where the project needs a broader cross-material tile comparison, Stone Tiles and Natural Stone Flooring sit above the Marble-specific tile decision.
Once Marble tiles have been selected for an outdoor area, the tile specification still changes with the setting. A pool surround, covered alfresco floor and enclosed courtyard do not place the same demands on the finished surface.
Pool surrounds with marble tiles get wet, walked on barefoot and exposed. Splash-out and residue from pool water dry on the surface between cleans. Finish carries most of the weight here. The textured outdoor families rather than a honed surface belong on a wet marble tiled area. The relationship between the marble tiles and the coping line is set early because coping thickness, profile and level all interact with the marble tiles. Falls should carry water away from the house rather than towards it.
An alfresco floor is often covered or partly covered. It sees less rain and more furniture, food and drink. The transition of marble tiles into the internal floor usually matters more here than anywhere else in a house because the two surfaces are seen together every day. A covered floor is still an external floor in most Australian homes. Specifying it as though it were a protected interior room can create problems later.
Courtyards are enclosed, often shaded and frequently tight. Leaf litter and organic matter sit longer on a shaded marble tile flooring area than others. Drainage options can be limited by the surrounding structure. Walls, doors and steps close in on every side, so set-out and finished levels have less room to absorb an error than an open terrace does.
A sample is one piece of stone. A floor is dozens or hundreds of them sitting side by side in daylight. The gap between them is where most disappointment with natural stone begins.
Marble is not one uniform product. Different selections carry different levels of colour, veining and movement. Some buyers want a quiet grey with very little happening in it. Others want the veining to be the point. Neither preference is wrong. The character of any given selection belongs to that stone rather than to Marble tiles as a category.
Premium block selection helps reduce unwanted colour spread, open veins, excessive cracking and movement outside the character selected for the range. It does not remove the natural variation that becomes visible across a full Marble tile floor.
Across a tiled space, a few habits matter more than most people expect:
Ordering marble tiles alongside coping, steps and other Marble pieces for the same project helps that coordination. It is not a promise of identical material. Marble is quarried rather than printed. A tiled floor should be planned on that basis.
An outdoor floor which has marble tiles installed all over, almost never stops at its own edges. It meets a coping, a step, a threshold, a wall or another paved surface. Those junctions decide whether a project reads as one piece of work or as several.
Pool coping is a separate product with its own profile, edge treatment and thickness. The relationship between marble pool coping and marble tiled area is a level decision as much as a visual one. It is easier to resolve on paper than on site.
Steps and level changes bring their own formats. Marble Treads and risers carry different dimensions from normal tiles. A riser height that works in a drawing can fall apart once the finished floor level moves by a few millimetres.
Adjoining surfaces deserve an early decision. Running the same Marble inside and out works well when the finish changes at the threshold and the level has been planned. A honed internal floor meeting a textured external floor in the same Marble is a deliberate specification rather than a mismatch.
Stone Planet supplies Marble in formats including pavers, tiles, pool coping, crazy paving, cobblestones, treads and risers, walling and custom project pieces. Availability in each format depends on the selection, so adjoining pieces need to be resolved against the actual Marble before project details are finalised.
This comparison comes up on most Marble tile enquiries. Marble look alike porcelain is manufactured or we can say human made. That has its own advantage. The pattern is produced to a fixed design, the formats are fixed and repeatability across a large order is high. For a buyer who wants a predictable floor with very little natural variation to manage, that is a real benefit.
Natural Marble stone is quarried. The colour and veining run through the material rather than across a printed face. No two tiles are identical. Variation is part of the product rather than a fault in it. The finish is developed on the stone itself.
The practical differences show up at specification. Porcelain arrives in the sizes and finishes the factory produces. Natural Marble can be cut to project requirements where the stone and production route support it. Marble-look porcelain offers much greater factory-controlled consistency across the floor. Marble asks for set-out and blending in return for a floor that is genuinely one-off.
Neither is better in the abstract. The right answer depends on the project, the appetite for variation and the way the floor is going to be built and looked after. The natural stone versus porcelain pool-surround guide covers that broader material comparison in more depth.
| Natural Marble tiles | Marble-look porcelain |
| Natural quarried stone | Manufactured tile product |
| Variation is part of the material | Greater factory-controlled repeatability |
| Project sizes may be possible where the stone and production route support them | Formats follow the manufacturer’s factory range |
| Finish is developed on the stone | Surface appearance is manufactured as part of the tile product |
Exterior Marble Tile care is mostly about keeping the floor and its joints free of grit, leaves, residue and spills. Textured surfaces only work as intended when they are kept clean.
Carrara Marble and Calacatta Marble supplied by Stone Planet are genuinely quarried in Italy. Both are long-established interior Marbles for floors and walls.
Honed Marble tiles and polished marble tiles are generally more aligned with interior floors and walls. It is typically P2 or P3, so it should not be treated as equivalent to the textured P4–P5 finishes used for outdoor Marble tiles. Where the same Marble runs inside and out, the finish can change at the threshold even though the stone does not.
Marble tiles can be used in kitchen flooring and selected wall applications where the actual stone, finish and installation suit the project. Kitchen areas introduce oils, food, drinks and acidic spills, so cleaning and sealing need to be treated as part of normal ownership rather than as a guarantee against marking. Natural Stone Flooring provides the broader flooring context when Marble is being compared with other natural stones.
Marble bathroom tiles can be used for floors and walls where the actual Marble and finish suit the area. Waterproofing remains a separate system beneath the tile and sealing does not replace it. Wet floor areas also need the appropriate surface and slip specification for the project. For broader material comparison, Stone Tiles covers natural-stone tile options beyond Marble.

Stone Planet is an Australian natural-stone wholesale supplier serving homeowners, trades and resellers, with Australia-wide delivery and free samples as part of the service. Stone Planet has supplied natural stone since 1993.
We buy Marble tiles directly from quarry sources in Turkey, Vietnam, Italy, China, India and Egypt. Experienced people inspect and assist with block selection at the source. Blocks are rejected for open veins, excessive cracks, poor colour and unwanted movement. Rejecting a block is cheaper for everyone than explaining it to a customer three months later.
Control continues through cutting, sizing, surface treatment, finishing, quality inspection, packing and loading. Cutting, sizing and surface treatment matter particularly in tile format because individual pieces meet repeatedly across one continuous floor.
Three things are worth settling before an exterior tiled Marble floor is specified:
Block selection focuses on premium-quality Marble. The Marble supplied by Stone Planet is silica free which is relevant to trades cutting and handling the stone on site. The engineered stone ban and natural stone guide explains the wider Australian context. We can safely say that you can buy marble tiles for all your projects from Stone Planet, local supplier for all your needs.
| Check | Why it matters |
| Marble selection | Confirms the actual stone and the level of natural variation being quoted. |
| Tile thickness | Affects finished levels and whether the selected product can be processed as required. |
| Finish | Confirms the actual exterior or interior surface. |
| Floor levels | Checks thresholds, drains, coping and adjoining surfaces before installation. |
| Quantity | Allows for cuts and sensible spare material where appropriate. |
| Related pieces | Coordinates coping, steps or other Marble components where the same stone is required. |
Buying Marble Tiles is easier when the Tile is treated as one part of a finished floor rather than an isolated product. The best order is the one that resolves the actual thickness, finish, floor geometry and connected stone pieces before installation begins.
Yes. Marble tiles are commonly used on courtyards, terraces, alfresco floors and pool surrounds. The finish and thickness of the actual selection decide whether a particular Marble tile suits a particular exterior floor.
The same Marble may be produced in tile and paver formats. The right format depends on the actual product, thickness, finish, substrate, finished levels and installation approach rather than a simple indoor/outdoor rule.
Antique and Sandblasted are the two finish families we use outdoors. Antique is a family rather than one recipe. The treatment can combine light sandblasting or brushing with tumbling depending on the stone and the source.
Outdoor Marble should achieve P4 to P5 slip resistance. Marble supplied for outdoor use by Stone Planet falls within this range. Whether a specific surface is P4 or P5 depends on the product and treatment, so the rating recorded against the actual product and finish is the one to use
There is no single answer. Stone Planet Marble can include 12 mm, 15 mm, 20 mm and 30 mm depending on the specific Marble, its source, the processing route and the format. Confirming the actual thickness of the chosen selection before finished floor levels are set is the step that matters
Commonly, yes. The substrate has to be sound and suitable for the work. Two confirmed points apply to Stone Planet Marble. 15 mm Marble must be adhered to concrete. 20 mm Marble is acceptable over a concrete slab. The adhesive system, falls, waterproofing and movement provision for the actual site remain installation-design decisions.
Yes, in the right finish and with the right substrate. Not every Marble suits every pool environment, so suitability should be confirmed against the actual selection. The coping is a separate product with its own profile and level requirements
Stone Planet supplies Marble dip sealed. Sealing helps manage absorption and staining but does not remove the need for routine cleaning. Resealing frequency depends on the stone, exposure and traffic rather than one fixed interval
Marble stays comparatively cool underfoot outdoors. It can still warm in strong direct sun, so aspect, shade and exposure affect how the surface feels on a hot day.
Yes, where the selected Marble and its production route support it. Stone Planet can produce sizes, thicknesses and finishes beyond the standard collection for project requirements. What is achievable is specific to the stone rather than universal across the range.
Yes. Carrara and Calacatta supplied by Stone Planet are genuinely quarried in Italy and are long-established interior Marbles. Honed Marble is generally more aligned with interior floors and walls and is typically P2 or P3 rather than the textured P4–P5 range used outdoors.
Yes, where the actual Marble, finish and installation suit the kitchen. Oils, food and acidic spills make cleaning and sealing important parts of the specification and ongoing care.
Yes, for suitable floors and walls. The actual finish needs to suit the wet-area requirement, and waterproofing remains a separate system beneath the Marble tile
