Travertine, Limestone, Marble, Granite, Bluestone or Sandstone?
Travertine, Limestone, Marble, Granite, Bluestone and Sandstone can all be considered for pool surrounds. Compare the colour and natural variation in the stone, the finish being supplied, the coping and step formats available and the total price for the complete pool area.
Do not rule out Sandstone or Bluestone simply because another material is more commonly associated with pools. Equally, do not assume a familiar pool stone automatically suits every finish or every project.
If porcelain is also on the shortlist, compare the natural stone and porcelain products on finish, thickness, edge pieces and the full project scope rather than assuming either one is automatically better.
For a home you expect to keep for years, the stone and finish you genuinely want to live with may carry more weight. On a renovation with a tighter budget or shorter ownership horizon, the total project cost and finished presentation may matter more. Neither approach guarantees a resale result.
Pool Pavers, Tiles or Crazy Paving?
Regular pavers and tiles use repeated sizes and give the surround a more ordered joint pattern. Crazy Paving uses loose irregular pieces and makes the joint layout part of the design. The stone, finish, thickness and build-up still need to suit the job whichever format is used.

Stone Pavers and Stone Tiles are regular formats supplied in repeated sizes. Tiles are not simply indoor stone and Pavers are not automatically suitable for every outdoor job; compare the size, thickness, finish and project build-up for the product being quoted.
Where the pool paving meets an alfresco area or an indoor floor, the spaces can still share a stone or colour family without using the same thickness or finish on both sides.
Crazy Paving Around Pools
Crazy Paving uses loose irregular pieces, so the joints become part of the finished look rather than following a repeating grid. It suits pool designs that want a looser, more natural layout, as long as the stone, finish and thickness suit the job.
Coping gives the waterline a clean edge while the irregular joints continue through the surrounding paving.
Pool Coping and Steps
Pool Coping gives the waterline a finished edge and sits directly against the surrounding paving. It can continue the same or a related stone for a quieter edge, or deliberately contrast with the paving. Compare the coping and paving together before ordering so the edge profile, colour and adjoining levels work as one detail.
Bullnose, Pencil Edge and Drop Edge
Bullnose has a rounded exposed edge, Pencil Edge keeps a squarer line with a smaller radius and Drop Edge carries a vertical downstand. Exact sizes vary by product, so check the coping dimensions on the stone you are buying.
Steps and Level Changes
Steps and changes in level may need Treads and Risers or other project pieces rather than standard paving alone. Work out those pieces with the paving order so you are not trying to source them after the paving has already arrived.
The builder or installer still needs to set the construction, finished levels and site-specific installation details.
Pool Paver Prices: What Changes the Cost?
Pool stone is rarely one square-metre rate from start to finish. The paving area, coping perimeter, step pieces, stone, size, thickness, finish, quantity and freight all affect the total.
Thicker stone generally costs more in material, but thickness alone does not prove that a product suits a pool project. The finish, product quality and intended use still need to be checked separately.
When comparing quotes, make sure they cover the same paving area, the same finish, the same length of coping, the same step pieces and the same delivery scope. A lower paving rate is not a like-for-like comparison if the rest of the pool stone has been left out.
Sealing and Caring for Natural Stone Pool Surrounds
For horizontal natural stone, Stone Planet’s normal sealing process is straightforward: start with clean stone, seal or dip-seal all sides before installation, install and clean the stone, then reseal the exposed top surface.
The sealer still needs to suit the stone and the installation. Do not assume one product, number of coats or resealing interval applies to every pool surround.
Routine cleaning should suit natural stone as well. Pool chemicals and outdoor cleaners are not automatically suitable for every stone or sealer simply because they are sold for pool areas.

Before ordering, check the finish, coping availability and any slip-test evidence needed for the stone you are buying. A material name on its own does not confirm those details.
